Update/Recover ChromeOS device using Recovery Tool
How to recover or update a ChromeOS device using the Chromebook Recovery Utility.
You will need a 4GB or larger USB drive or SD card. The flash drive will be wiped during this process. During the recovery/update of the ChromeOS device, it will be wiped as well.
Full instructions can be found at https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/6002417
First, you will need to install the Cromebook Recovery Utility. This can be done on another ChromeOS device or on Windows with Chrome Browser installed. In your Chrome browser, go to the webstore and search for Chromebook Recovery Utility or visit this link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chromebook-recovery-utili/jndclpdbaamdhonoechobihbbiimdgai
The CRU allows you to browse for and select your device, but is recommended that you enter the device model number to ensure you get the correct version. The device model is listed at the bottom of the ChromsOS recovery screen. To get to the recovery screen on the device you need to update/recover and retrieve your model number:
On HP Chromebooks, boot to the login screen, then hold down ESC+Refresh and press power.
On HP Chromeboxes, use a paper clip to press in and hold the reset button while you power on the device.
Now that you have the CRU installed and have the model number of the device you are recovering, insert your flash drive on the system you installed the CRU and launch the CRU (Should be listed as "Recovery" in your Chrome Apps). Follow the directions in the CRU to download and install the recovery image for your model onto your flash drive. When prompted to Identify your Chromebook, enter the model number you got from the ChromeOS Recovery screen or choose "Select a model from a list" to browse for and select the model that way.
The CRU will then download, install and verify the recovery image onto your USB drive. Once complete, remove the thumbdrive for your computer. Do not connect it to your ChromeOS Device Yet!
Boot your ChromeOS device to the recovery screen if it is not already there. Once you see the screen saying to insert a recovery USB stick, connect your USB drive to the device. Chrome will automatically detect and install the image. Once complete, the Recovery program will ask you to remove the USB drive and will then reboot the device.
